Can a battery be added to an existing solar PV system?
At a glance. Often it can, but the solution depends on the existing inverter model and the complete system design. A battery cannot be selected solely by the solar PV system’s power.

What does AC coupling mean?
With AC coupling, the solar PV system and storage equipment interact on the alternating-current side. This does not mean connecting a battery to any unused terminal on the existing inverter. Deye SUN-(3–8)K-SG06LP3-EU-CM2 documentation specifies AC coupling for retrofitting an existing system. The manufacturer’s name alone is not enough
The Huawei LUNA2000-S1 manual links compatibility to inverter series and firmware versions. The label “Huawei inverter” is therefore not sufficient for selection. Deye and other manufacturers’ equipment must likewise be identified precisely. The battery management system (BMS) must communicate correctly with the inverter. What information should you send?
- A photo of the inverter label showing the full model code; you may cover personal details.
- The existing solar PV system’s power, number of phases and equipment diagram, if available.
- Evening and overnight electricity consumption; a monthly bill alone does not show when electricity is used.
- Your objective: greater use of your own energy, backup power or both.
- Whether you plan to add a heat pump or an electric vehicle.
When should you wait before buying?
If the battery model, operating voltage or backup wiring has not been checked, confirm the configuration first. Greater capacity does not resolve incompatibility. Specific savings should not be assumed without consumption and generation data.
